A wayward romance with Adele Pickvance.

A ‘First Date’ with Adele Pickvance, (The Go-Betweens, Robert
Forster, Dave Graney Show, Far Out Corporation) & The Chandeliers,
Scott Mercer on guitar and Ash Shanahan on drums is a cheeky fling
with post punk power pop.

With a delightful move up front to vocals, Pickvance’s songs are love
situations told with the blunt playfulness of the classic bass, drums and
guitar three piece. The tight interplay of Mercer’s Tom Verlaine tinged
guitar and Shanahans fluid drumming hooked up with Pickvance’s
grounded tight melodic bass is an energetic live performance and
captured brilliantly in the studio.
Pickvance grew up musically in the contrasting surrounds of the
industrial north of England in a town called Bury and sunny Brisbane,
Australia. She is known for performing and recording with Australia’s
most acclaimed songwriters (Forster, McLennan and Graney), and was
described by Grant McLennan as ‘The Duchess of the deep end’.
As the song title, Breaking All The Rules, suggests, First Date has
been a chance for Pickvance to move in a new direction. ‘I’ve created a
band that plays louder, faster and with a higher energy than I have ever
performed before. I met Scott and Ash through 4zzz community radio,
where I do a show called ‘Brighten the Corners’ and they have provided
the freedom for me to experiment while maintaining the tradition of the
classic song format.’
German On My Mind exudes high tension riffs and germanic rock
throb, indulging Pickvance’s German loves. Trapped in a new wave
echo chamber her thoughts are questioned by Karin Bäumler (partner
and bandmate of Robert Forster) who joined the recording session to
deliver curious interjections in her native Bavarian. Treasure has a
sparkling chorus line with glints of hope that it’s ok to keep looking for
something special. The album references post punk with that familiar
feeling that we’re going to stuff things up when Something Good Is
Happening and the reality check that sometimes its just better to let
go in the powerful Swimming With Sharks. Pickvance channels the
craftsmanship and energy of Pete Shelley from the Buzzcocks and pays
homage to his influence with a version of Love You More. Finally, She
leaves us wondering what’s next in the love affair, finishing the album
with a ‘naff’ poem about roast chicken in How I Love My Sunday
